Breakout sesson: Social media for online publishers

Lisa Williams of Placebogger.com facilitated a great discussion on what issues online publishers deal with when it comes to social media and their sites. Here are the full notes.

Questions to ponder…

Q: Twitter or Facebook? Which is most effective for your site?

It depends.  Some publishers in this session use Twitter for quick fact dissemination.  Some use FB for listening and making comments about what’s going on the home site.

Some publishers find that users feel more comfortable commenting on FB rather than posting a comment on their home site.

Q: What tools are working for you to manage social media platforms for your site?

Tools for scheduling social media updates

HootSuite
Measured Voice — allows you to make each post/Tweet slightly different
CoTweet
Dlvr.it — schedule things to trickle out at particular times.
Socialize Your Cause — specifically for nonprofits — social media suite
Everyblock

Q: How do we navigate the uncertainty of FaceBook changes for journalists?

Publishers found www.facebook.com/journalists to be helpful to keep up with changes.
